Albino Red-Eared Slider Turtle

Bright, beautiful, and full of personality, the Albino Red-Eared Slider is a stunning color morph of one of the world's most popular aquatic turtles. Its vibrant yellow shell, creamy white skin, and striking pink or red eyes make it a true centerpiece in any properly maintained aquatic setup. Active, curious, and hardy, these turtles are an excellent choice for keepers who are prepared to provide the space and long-term care they require.

Origin

The Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) is native to the southern United States and northern Mexico. Albino individuals are selectively bred in captivity and are not found naturally in the wild. Captive-bred turtles are well adapted to life in home aquariums and ponds when given proper care.

Diet

Albino Red-Eared Sliders are omnivores and benefit from a varied diet, including:

  • High-quality commercial aquatic turtle pellets as a staple.
  • Leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, dandelion greens, collard greens, and mustard greens.
  • Occasional vegetables including squash and carrots.
  • Protein treats such as earthworms, crickets, mealworms, shrimp, or small fish (fed in moderation).

Young turtles require a higher proportion of protein, while adults should consume more leafy greens and vegetables.

Enclosure & Tank Size

These turtles grow considerably larger than many first-time keepers expect.

  • Hatchlings: Minimum 40-gallon (150 L) aquarium.
  • Juveniles: 75-gallon (280 L) aquarium or larger.
  • Adults: Minimum 120-gallon (450 L) aquarium, with larger enclosures strongly recommended.

A good guideline is 10 gallons (38 L) of water per inch of shell length, though more space is always better. Provide a spacious basking platform where the turtle can completely dry off.

Recommended Water Parameters

  • Water temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C)
  • Basking temperature: 90–95°F (32–35°C)
  • Ambient air temperature: 78–82°F (26–28°C)
  • pH: 6.8–7.8
  • Powerful filtration capable of handling heavy waste production.
  • Dechlorinated water with regular partial water changes.

Lighting

Daily access to both UVA and UVB lighting is essential for healthy shell development, proper calcium metabolism, and overall health. Provide 10–12 hours of light each day, and replace UVB bulbs according to the manufacturer's recommendations, even if they still produce visible light.

Care Tips

  • Albino turtles are more sensitive to intense lighting than normal-colored sliders. Provide shaded areas within the enclosure so they can retreat from bright light when desired.
  • Maintain excellent water quality through strong filtration and routine maintenance.
  • Offer a varied diet supplemented with calcium to promote healthy shell growth.
  • Remove uneaten food promptly to help maintain clean water.
  • Handle only when necessary, as turtles generally prefer minimal handling.
  • With proper care, Albino Red-Eared Sliders can live 25–40 years or more, making them a long-term commitment.

Whether you're an experienced reptile keeper or looking to add a truly eye-catching aquatic turtle to your collection, the Albino Red-Eared Slider offers beauty, intelligence, and engaging behavior that make it a rewarding companion for years to come.
