The American alligator is one of North America's most iconic reptiles, prized for its impressive appearance, intelligence, and powerful presence. With proper care and an appropriately sized enclosure, American alligators can become fascinating long-term captives for experienced reptile keepers and licensed facilities.

Diet
American alligators are carnivores. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet consisting of:

• Whole prey items (rats, mice, rabbits, fish)
• Fresh fish and aquatic prey
• Commercial crocodilian diets when available
• Occasional poultry or other lean meats as part of a balanced feeding program

Juveniles should be fed more frequently than adults, while mature animals typically eat one to three times per week depending on size, temperature, and body condition.

Enclosure Size
American alligators grow exceptionally large and require expansive accommodations.

• Hatchlings: Minimum 75–120 gallon enclosure with both land and water areas.
• Juveniles: Large indoor ponds or custom-built enclosures.
• Adults: Secure outdoor habitats or professionally designed indoor exhibits with thousands of gallons of water and ample dry basking space. Adult alligators commonly exceed 10 feet (3 meters) in length.

Recommended Environmental Parameters

• Water temperature: 78–84°F (26–29°C)
• Ambient air temperature: 80–88°F (27–31°C)
• Basking area: 90–95°F (32–35°C)
• Humidity: 60–80%
• UVB lighting is recommended for indoor enclosures to support normal calcium metabolism and overall health.
• Clean, well-filtered water is essential due to the animal's size and waste production.

Care Tips

• Suitable only for experienced keepers and facilities equipped to house very large crocodilians.
• Provide deep water for swimming alongside spacious dry land for basking.
• Use heavy-duty filtration and perform regular water changes to maintain excellent water quality.
• Offer secure hiding areas for young animals to reduce stress.
• Minimize unnecessary handling, as alligators are powerful, wild animals that do not become domesticated.

American Alligator Trade-Back & Surrender Program

Automatic Enrollment

Every customer who purchases an American alligator from our facility is automatically enrolled in our Trade-Back & Surrender Program at no additional cost. This program is designed to help owners responsibly manage their alligator as it grows and its housing requirements change.

Program Overview

American alligators can grow significantly throughout their lives. To support long-term responsible ownership, enrolled customers may be eligible to:

• Trade their alligator back to us and receive a smaller replacement alligator, subject to availability and program terms.
• Permanently surrender their alligator to us without receiving a replacement animal.

Our goal is to provide responsible long-term solutions that prioritize both animal welfare and owner needs.

Eligibility Requirements

To participate in the Trade-Back & Surrender Program:

• The alligator must have originally been purchased directly from our facility.
• The customer must provide proof of purchase.
• The alligator must be legally possessed and transferred in accordance with all applicable local, state/provincial, and federal laws.
• The alligator must be in good overall health and free from contagious diseases or parasites that could pose a risk to other animals.
• The customer must contact us in advance to arrange evaluation and transfer.

Trade-Back Process

1. Contact us to request a trade-back evaluation.
2. Provide current photographs, measurements, and information about the alligator's health and condition.
3. We will review the request and determine eligibility.
4. If approved, arrangements will be made for surrender or transportation of the alligator.
5. Upon successful transfer, the customer may receive a replacement juvenile American alligator, subject to availability and legal requirements.

Voluntary Surrender Option

Customers who no longer wish to keep their alligator may voluntarily surrender the animal to us without receiving a replacement.

• No replacement animal is required.
• The surrendered alligator will be evaluated and accepted based on available facility space, animal welfare considerations, and legal requirements.
• Transportation, veterinary, permit, or handling fees may still apply.
• Advance approval is required before any surrender is arranged.

This option is intended to provide owners with a responsible alternative to rehoming or improper release of an alligator.

Replacement Animal

• Replacement alligators are provided based on current inventory and availability.
• Replacement size, age, and sex cannot be guaranteed unless otherwise agreed in writing.
• Customers are responsible for any applicable shipping, permit, veterinary, inspection, or handling fees.
• The replacement alligator will be enrolled in the Trade-Back & Surrender Program upon transfer.

Animal Welfare Standards

We reserve the right to refuse acceptance of any alligator that:

• Appears severely neglected or abused.
• Has a contagious illness that may threaten other animals.
• Cannot be legally transferred.
• Presents an unacceptable safety risk during transport or intake.

Our primary goal is to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all animals involved.

Fees

Participation in the Trade-Back & Surrender Program is included with the original purchase. However, customers may be responsible for:

• Transportation costs
• Shipping charges
• Veterinary examinations
• Permit or licensing fees
• Other regulatory compliance costs

Any applicable fees will be disclosed before a trade-back or surrender is finalized.

Program Limitations

• Participation is subject to animal availability, facility capacity, and legal restrictions.
• Enrollment in the program does not guarantee immediate acceptance of an alligator.
• Wait times may apply if intake space is limited.
• We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the program as required for animal welfare, facility capacity, or legal compliance.

Responsible Ownership Commitment

The Trade-Back & Surrender Program is intended to encourage responsible ownership and provide owners with a long-term management option as their alligator grows. Customers remain responsible for proper care, housing, nutrition, and compliance with all applicable laws while the animal is in their possession.

By purchasing an American alligator from us, you acknowledge that you have read and understand the Trade-Back & Surrender Program and agree to comply with all applicable terms and conditions. Participation in the program is voluntary and subject to approval at the time of any requested trade-back or surrender.
