Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii)

The alligator snapping turtle is one of North America’s largest freshwater turtles and is renowned for its powerful jaws, heavily ridged shell, and distinctive prehistoric appearance. It is native to the southeastern United States, particularly slow-moving rivers, oxbow lakes, swamps, and other deep freshwater habitats.

Origin:
Native to the southeastern United States, with populations occurring primarily in the Mississippi River drainage and parts of the Gulf Coast region.

Diet:
Alligator snapping turtles are opportunistic carnivores. Their natural diet includes fish, crayfish, aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and carrion. In captivity, a properly formulated aquatic-turtle diet can be supplemented with appropriately sized whole-food prey. A varied diet is preferable to feeding a single food item routinely.

Tank/Enclosure Size:
These turtles become exceptionally large and require substantial space. A young turtle can be housed temporarily in a suitably sized aquarium or indoor enclosure, but adults generally require a very large, purpose-built aquatic enclosure or professionally designed pond system. Plan for the adult size from the beginning rather than relying on a standard aquarium.

Recommended Parameters:

• Water temperature: approximately 75–80°F (24–27°C) for many captive individuals, with appropriate seasonal variation as advised by an experienced aquatic-turtle veterinarian.
• Water quality: maintain excellent filtration and perform regular water changes.
• Water depth: provide enough depth for natural swimming and movement while ensuring the turtle can easily reach the surface.
• Lighting: provide a suitable full-spectrum/UVB lighting setup when kept indoors, along with a proper day/night cycle.
• Filtration: use oversized mechanical and biological filtration because these turtles produce considerable waste.
• Substrate: a bare-bottom setup or large, smooth substrate that cannot easily be swallowed is generally safer than fine gravel.

Adult Size:
Alligator snapping turtles are capable of reaching well over 100 pounds (45 kg), with exceptionally large individuals exceeding that considerably. Shell length can reach roughly 2 feet (60 cm) or more in very large specimens.

Care Tips:
Provide excellent water quality, powerful filtration, adequate swimming space, and a secure enclosure. Avoid overcrowding and handle the turtle only when necessary—their bite is extremely powerful. Feed an appropriately varied diet without overfeeding, monitor growth and body condition, and establish access to an experienced exotic or reptile veterinarian. Because of their eventual size, longevity, specialized enclosure requirements, and legal protections in some jurisdictions, prospective keepers should verify local regulations and be prepared for a long-term commitment before acquiring one.
