Albino Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina)

Our Albino Common Snapping Turtles are a truly striking color morph of one of North America's most iconic freshwater turtles. Their vibrant yellow to creamy-white coloration, paired with pink or light-colored eyes, makes them an exceptional display animal for experienced turtle keepers. Captive-bred whenever available, these turtles are active, hardy, and develop impressive size and personality with proper care.

Origin:
Native to freshwater habitats throughout eastern and central North America, including ponds, lakes, marshes, rivers, and slow-moving streams. Albino specimens are an extremely rare genetic color mutation that is primarily produced through selective captive breeding.

Diet:
Common Snapping Turtles are opportunistic omnivores and thrive on a varied diet including:

  • High-quality aquatic turtle pellets

  • Earthworms and nightcrawlers

  • Crickets, roaches, and other insects

  • Fish and shrimp (fresh or frozen)

  • Snails and other aquatic invertebrates

  • Occasional leafy greens and aquatic vegetation

Juveniles should be fed daily, while adults generally require feeding 2–3 times per week.

Minimum Enclosure Size:

  • Hatchlings: 40-gallon breeder aquarium

  • Juveniles: 75–125 gallons

  • Adults: 300+ gallons, indoor ponds, or large outdoor ponds in appropriate climates

These turtles become very large and require ample swimming space with excellent filtration.

Recommended Water Parameters:

  • Water Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

  • Basking Area: 85–90°F (29–32°C)

  • Ambient Air Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

  • Water pH: 6.8–7.8

  • Powerful canister or pond filtration is essential due to their heavy waste production.

  • UVB lighting is recommended for indoor enclosures to support proper shell growth and overall health.

Care Tips:

  • Best suited for intermediate to advanced keepers due to their adult size and powerful bite.

  • Provide a secure enclosure with deep water for swimming and a stable platform for basking.

  • Perform regular partial water changes to maintain excellent water quality.

  • Minimize unnecessary handling, as snapping turtles are defensive when out of the water.

  • Offer environmental enrichment such as driftwood, sturdy rocks, and varied aquatic décor while ensuring all items are securely placed.

  • Adult snapping turtles are generally solitary and are best housed alone to prevent aggression.

With proper husbandry, Albino Common Snapping Turtles can live 30–50 years or more, making them a fascinating long-term addition for dedicated reptile enthusiasts.
