Geoffroy's Side-Necked Turtle (Phrynops geoffroanus)

The Geoffroy's Side-Necked Turtle is a fascinating South American freshwater species known for its distinctive sideways neck-folding behavior, streamlined shell, and active personality. Unlike most turtles that retract their heads straight back, side-necked turtles tuck their necks beneath the edge of their shell, making them a unique addition to any aquatic reptile collection. Hardy and inquisitive, they make an excellent choice for experienced turtle keepers looking for an uncommon species.

Origin:
Native to South America, Geoffroy's Side-Necked Turtles are found throughout river systems in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, northern Argentina, and surrounding regions. They inhabit slow-moving rivers, streams, ponds, and wetlands with abundant basking opportunities.

Diet:
These turtles are omnivorous with a preference for animal protein. A varied diet should include:

  • High-quality aquatic turtle pellets

  • Earthworms, insects, shrimp, and snails

  • Fish (offered occasionally)

  • Leafy greens and aquatic vegetation

  • Occasional vegetables such as squash or zucchini

Providing a diverse diet helps ensure balanced nutrition and healthy growth.

Recommended Enclosure:

  • Juveniles: Minimum 40-gallon aquarium

  • Adults: 100–125+ gallon aquarium or indoor pond

  • Water depth should allow for easy swimming while still providing resting areas.

  • Include driftwood, rocks, and a sturdy basking platform.

Recommended Water Parameters:

  • Water Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C)

  • Basking Temperature: 88–92°F (31–33°C)

  • pH: 6.8–7.8

  • Powerful filtration is essential, as these turtles produce a significant amount of waste.

  • Provide full-spectrum UVB lighting for 10–12 hours daily to support healthy shell and bone development.

Care Tips:

  • Perform regular partial water changes to maintain excellent water quality.

  • Offer a dry basking area where the turtle can completely leave the water.

  • Supplement the diet with calcium as needed to promote healthy shell growth.

  • While generally hardy, Geoffroy's Side-Necked Turtles appreciate minimal handling and thrive when given plenty of swimming space and environmental enrichment.

  • With proper care, they can live 25 years or more.

Whether you're expanding your aquatic turtle collection or looking for a unique freshwater reptile, the Geoffroy's Side-Necked Turtle offers an engaging display animal with distinctive behavior, attractive appearance, and rewarding long-term care.
