Provide plenty of vertical climbing space, branches, vines, and foliage.
-
Use a secure screen top and good ventilation.
-
Provide appropriate UVB lighting and a day/night lighting cycle.
-
Offer appropriately sized, gut-loaded insects and supplement them as recommended.
-
Mist the enclosure regularly, as anoles often drink water droplets from leaves and surfaces.
-
Provide hiding areas and foliage to help the lizard feel secure.
-
Monitor temperature and humidity with reliable digital gauges.
Important: Tail Popping
Green anoles can drop their tails when frightened, grabbed, or exposed to significant stress. This is known as tail autotomy. The tail can regrow, but the replacement is usually shorter and different in appearance from the original.
To reduce the chance of tail loss:
-
Never grab or pull the lizard by the tail.
-
Handle gently and allow the animal to move onto your hand rather than chasing or restraining it.
-
Minimize sudden movements and stressful handling.
-
Provide plenty of cover and climbing areas in the enclosure.
