House geckos are small, active geckos that are popular with reptile keepers because of their manageable size and relatively simple care requirements. They are primarily nocturnal and may become more active after the lights go out.

Origin

  • Native to parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, depending on the species.

  • Many house geckos have also become established in warm regions around the world.

  • Commonly found around buildings, trees, walls, and other areas where insects are abundant.

Adult Size

  • Typical adult size: 3–5 inches

  • Males and females are generally similar in overall size, depending on species.

Diet

House geckos are insectivores.

  • Crickets

  • Small roaches

  • Fruit flies

  • Mealworms and other appropriately sized insects

  • Other small feeder insects

Feed prey that is appropriately sized for the gecko. Gut-load feeder insects and provide appropriate calcium supplementation.

Enclosure Size

  • One adult: 10-gallon tall enclosure or larger

  • A 20-gallon tall enclosure provides additional room for climbing and enrichment.

  • Provide plenty of vertical space because house geckos are excellent climbers.

Water & Temperature

  • Recommended water temperature: Room temperature, approximately 68–75°F

  • Provide fresh water in a shallow dish.

  • Lightly mist the enclosure as needed to provide drinking droplets and maintain appropriate humidity.

  • Warm side: approximately 78–82°F

  • Cool side: approximately 70–75°F

  • Use a thermometer to monitor enclosure temperatures.

Basic Care Tips

  • Provide branches, vines, plants, and other climbing surfaces.

  • Include several hiding areas throughout the enclosure.

  • Maintain good ventilation while providing adequate humidity.

  • Use a secure screen or locking enclosure because house geckos are excellent escape artists.

  • Provide a normal day/night cycle.

  • Avoid excessive handling, as house geckos are small and delicate.

  • Offer appropriately sized live insects several times per week.

  • Remove uneaten insects when necessary.

  • Keep the enclosure clean and provide fresh water regularly.

House geckos are small, active, and insectivorous reptiles that are best suited for keepers who enjoy observing natural climbing and hunting behaviors.
